Roland Martin, Headmaster
"The future is not something that happens to us; it is something we help to shape through the choices we make, the people we meet and the opportunities we embrace."
We live in a world that changes rapidly and often unpredictably. The future can feel as difficult to read as the weather, let alone the economy, technology or the jobs market. As the educationalist Anthony Seldon has observed, it is having humanity that will help young people to navigate the world of work in an age of machines.
And yet there is cause for optimism. The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius reminded himself that we cannot always control what happens around us, but we can control how we respond. Curiosity, adaptability, resilience, judgement and the ability to work well with others remain qualities that endure, whatever changes the future may bring.
Events such as our Future Pathways Fair help young people to look ahead with confidence. They provide an opportunity to explore possibilities, challenge assumptions, meet inspiring people and discover routes they may never previously have considered.
I am grateful to all our exhibitors, universities, employers and advisers for supporting this important event. I hope this evening proves to be the beginning of many such opportunities.
